The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
