The Gaming Giant Brings Onboard Apex Legends Developer to Rescue Challenged Action Game Ambitious Title
The renowned publisher has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently developing the upcoming third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Shift Comes After Poor Response
Brinkman takes on the leadership position at the development studio following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' underwhelming early showing last fall.
On Wednesday, 2K president a key figure notified employees about this organizational change through an internal memo, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had indicated the necessity for a distinct game identity.
The president expressed that the team is now reimagining Project Ethos with a refreshed vision, aiming to better meet community desires.
Trend of Key Recruitment
The news follows a similar move taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to contribute to the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the complete text from Ismailer's memo:
Hello Everyone—
I understand you all just completed your town hall - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the recent updates. Previously I shared you all a note, I stated the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative creators we have had the chance to collaborate with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to endure.”
Given your hard work and flexibility, particularly over the last year, you repeatedly show that.
The community feedback from last autumn’s Project ETHOS testing phase was enlightening. It validated the potential of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had refinements needed. It revealed the need for a clearer identity.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the criticism to mind and revamped the title with a renewed goal - one that’s ready to deliver on its ambition to our players.
The trust in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To boost the remarkable development you’ve made, It is a pleasure to announce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Lead of the team. Following some time of conversations, Ben starts with us on next week.
His leadership and expertise in the PVP shooter space is considerable, having spent the last 15 years creating and leading some of the most well-known series in the industry, for example the acclaimed shooter, and lately, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in greeting Ben soon. We are all looking forward to keep seeing the progress of the game in the time to ahead.
David

Brinkman earlier was employed at major gaming companies in diverse production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Title Details and Vision
Project Ethos was revealed in last year in conjunction with a public demo. At the time, the developers portrayed the game as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting evolution on the category."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the description states. "Face the opponents with fresh skills, risks, and obstacles that change every match. Will you withdraw carefully with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively take a risk, gamble everything, and pray your squad can achieve the highest spot? The decision is up to you."
The game has not yet received an announced release date or consoles, but players can expect further news as creation continues.
